Poombarai — terraced farms and an old temple, an hour from town

A dawn viewpoint over stepped green terraced farms descending into a misty valley in a Kodaikanal hill village

About 20 kilometres and an hour's drive from Kodaikanal town, Poombarai is a village built around stepped hillside farms and an old temple. It is an easy morning trip that trades the busy lake for terraced green valleys and a slower, lived-in kind of quiet.

The viewpoint over the terraces

The reason most people come is the view. From the Poombarai viewpoint you look out over farms cut into the hillside in long green-and-gold steps, dropping away into the valley. It is free to visit and best seen early; before about 2:30 in the afternoon the mist usually holds off and the terraces stay clear.

The temple on the hill

Poombarai is also home to the Kuzhanthai Velappar temple, an old Murugan temple that draws visitors for its age and its quiet, hilltop setting. Nearby, the Kurinji Andavar temple sits about 18 kilometres from town with a calm view over the Palani hills. Timings for both are best checked locally, as they shift around festival days.

What else is close

The Poombarai side of the hills pairs well with a few nearby stops, as the Pine Forest, the Guna Caves and the Mannavanur meadows all lie in the same direction. Villagers here also make and sell homemade chocolate, spices and eucalyptus oil, which make for honest, useful things to carry home.

Poombarai isn't a checklist stop. It's a slow morning in a working village, and better for it.

Go early for the clear view

The terraces photograph best in the first half of the day. Leave town soon after breakfast and you'll usually beat the afternoon mist to the viewpoint.

It is a short trip, but the road up and back still takes a chunk of the day. Starting from a central, restful base — an early breakfast, a warm room to come back to — is the difference between a rushed run and an easy morning out.
