Getting to Kodaikanal takes a little effort, and that's part of why it still feels unhurried. There's no airport or railway station inside the town, so every route finishes with a drive up the hills. Here's the simplest way in, whichever direction you're coming from.
Get oriented first
Kodaikanal sits high in the Palani Hills of Tamil Nadu. The nearest transport hubs are Madurai and Dindigul, and the last stretch from either — curvy, cool and scenic — is what separates the hill town from the rush below.
By air
For longer distances, flying is the time-saver. Madurai is the nearest airport, well connected to Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad. From there it's roughly a three to four hour drive up. If you're landing late or in peak season, arrange a cab in advance.
By train
Dindigul Junction is usually the closest railhead and a common first choice, about three hours from town by road. Madurai Junction is the other option, with a slightly longer drive. Taxis and buses run from both stations through the day.
By road and bus
- From Chennai: a long haul, often overnight — many travellers use a bus or combine train and road.
- From Bengaluru: the route via Salem and Dindigul is popular; a full day with breaks.
- From Coimbatore: shorter and calmer, and one of the more scenic approaches.
- From Madurai: the most straightforward, with frequent buses and taxis. All buses drop at the Kodaikanal bus stand.
The last climb is slow by design. Take the hairpins gently and let the mist come to you.
The hill drive itself
The final climb isn't hard, but it asks for patience: hairpin bends, narrow stretches and fog, especially early morning and after dark. The roads are generally in good shape, but slow driving matters. If you're not used to hill roads, a local driver takes the stress out of it.
Arrive with the day still ahead
October to March gives the most comfortable travel conditions. Aim to reach by afternoon so you can settle in before the evening cold sets in.
Once you're up here, a central base means most sights are a short hop rather than another long drive — which is the quickest way to shake off the journey.
