Which end you protect depends on what you're after. The first two or three days carry the darshan and the cultural events. The visarjan processions belong to the 23rd, and they're at their biggest in Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Goa. A hill trip is the other kind of festival break. Quieter, and mostly outdoors.
September in Kodaikanal, honestly
September sits in the green half of the year. Expect mist, cool weather and rain-washed hills. The weather will have opinions about your plans. A viewpoint can sit under cloud, then clear without warning, and road and attraction access shifts with the rain. The trade is a fair one. The hills are at their greenest, and the town is far quieter than it is in the April to June rush.
Two days is the right length
The Lovedale sits at the entrance of Kodaikanal, about 2 km from the lake, so the sightseeing starts a few minutes after you do. Keep day one close to town — Coaker's Walk for the valley, Bryant Park for an hour among the flowers, then the lake for a boat or just a snack by the water. Most people give the lake an hour and a half and don't regret it.
Day two goes further out: Pine Forest, Guna Caves, Pillar Rocks and Green Valley View, thirty to forty-five minutes each, then lunch in town and the drive home. At Guna Caves, stay inside the marked viewing areas. Breakfast is included and cooked fresh, so the morning needs no planning.
A festival break is measured in evenings, not in viewpoints.
